THROUGH MASECA
Through Maseca
performed live at Hairpin Arts Center in Chicago, IL as a part of Exsanguination
single channel video projection
TRT about 45 min
(second iteration and first live performance of this project)
Through Maseca is meditative ritual performance and an exaggeration of tradition, an erotic and furious material explosion.
In this work I mix my body weight in masa, using 25 bags of Maseca: the homogenized, super-crop brand of corn flour found all over the world and used by all Latino communities.
This action is set to a rhapsodic collage of images and sounds ranging from indigenous Pipil ritual dances,
YouTube masa making tutorials, boleros and ballads, news reports, anthropological studies,
the Salvadorian anthem and other popular media.
Special thanks to Roberto Sifuentes & AWXEL for supporting this project.
